Amazon CEO praises Android

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos took it upon himself to give Google Android OS the praise that it deserves. According to Bezos:
Android is accomplishing everything that Amazon needs it to and, at the same time, giving the company flexibility to customize things. We treat Android like Linux, and so it’s a base OS layer. We have a large dedicated team that customizes Android and that’s what you see on the Kindle Fire.
I think it’s great to see a CEO of such a huge player like Amazon praising Android for what it offers to everyone. It’s probably the least he can do considering the sales Android has helped give the Kindle Fire, and the upcoming success the Kindle Fire 2 and Kindle Fire HD will bring to the company.

When asked if Amazon has any plans on straying away from Android, Bezos gave a simply answer of ”No, we like Android.”

Top Smartphone Of 2012

We are nearing the end of the first month of 2013, and as promised we are bringing you the top smartphones of 2012. So without further ado lets get started with it. 2012 was a total change for the mobile era in the post PC era. Last year we were there to witness that fall and growth of companies like Nokia, Apple, HTC, Samsung, etc. But overall last year companies pumped out quite a lot of very intuitive and powerful devices for consumers.
#1 in the list is the Samsung Galaxy S III, although the Galaxy S III was not the best selling device of 2012 but it did take the crown for being the best selling android powered device of all time. The reason why Samsung was successful in selling millions of this device is because they really built a very good device from the ground up despite the ranters which say it is built with cheap parts. Overall it proves that if you have the perfect formula you too can have a world class best selling phone.
Coming up next is the iPhone 5 which is really the best iPhone Apple has ever made period. The iPhone 5 shows boundaries which Apple is yet to conquer and with this new iPhone they finally increased the screen size. Apple was also very successful in the iPhone 5 because they preserved the iPhone style there; meaning that i asked a few iPhone 5 users which previously owned iPhones and they said that the iPhone 5 is exactly like an iPhone. That is where apple was most successful. The iPhone 5 overall is a pretty good device and it really is one of the best mainstream phones out there.
The next in the list is the HTC One X which at the time of launching, the first quad core powered phone. Although HTC did not quite sell much of this phone to create records but they did create a phone which has a very good feel in the hand. The One X overall has one of the best built quality among android phones last year. Putting things back to perspective, the HTC One X still made our cut because of its camera and overall build quality which is seemingly above average.
Coming in next is the Optimus G which is by LGs record a very successful device indeed. The device even became the baseline for the 4th google phone dubbed the Nexus 4. This device is also the first device to use the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor in which that time was a very beast of a CPU. The Optimus Gs design is truly amazing with the shimmering little dots on the back which gives that premium feel to it. Not to mention it also has a very good 13MP camera and that gorgeous screen which LG touts quite a lot a the launch. Overall i can say that LG has built a very solid and good phone but the software is still not close to what Samsung is giving users.
In the next run is the king of the phablets, the Galaxy Note II which has been a very successful. This device really defined what a phone and tablet was bridging the gap between the two and bringing productivity to something which fits right into your pocket. The Galaxy Note lineup also redefined the screen max screen size of phones which are seemingly getting bigger and also having big phones are also quite a trend in asian countries. The reviews for the Note II is also seemingly good and overall, i would still recommend this device to buy if you want a powerful and productive device and you dont care about the screen.
Coming in right after the kind of phablets is the Nokia Lumia 920 which is in my eyes the best looking device out there now. The Lumia 920 was launched in late 2012 and brought to the table quite a number of new innovations like optical image stabilization on mobile phones, a supersensitive screen, and etc. The Lumia 920 was also the first device to start the trend of wireless charging which is now on quite a number of device. This is also the pioneer of the Windows Phone 8 ecosystem and the sales of it are pretty good with retailers not having stock. But despite all of the good comments the Lumia 920 it still is very bulky and heavy to some people that is why i did not place it in the third position.
Coming in the last is the Asus PadFone 2 which is a pioneer in the new hybrid category. Not to mention the PadFone 2 is actually a pretty beastly device with specs similar to the Optimus G and the Nexus 4. The design and specs of the PadFone 2 is really majestic with every thing thought of like how you dock the phone to the tablet dock. This closes up the top smartphone of 2012 list. I would like to say out also why the Nexus 4 did not make the cut, it is because the Nexus 4 is basically the Optimus G fully unlocked and supported by Google. 2012 has been an exciting and fun year for the mobile industry. Catch our top smartphones of 2013 next year at around this time also. So until then thank you and bye bye.

Google Glasses are almost here!

Google have released a fabulous video to get us pumped up and excited for Project Glass: Google’s augmented reality glasses. To be honest, it’s worked on me. I want a pair of these right now!

Augmented reality is the concept of altering or overlaying what we see. If these glasses are one day released to the public, we could all be comfortably reading the news as we walk to work, or watching a video without having to tilt our heads down. It’s an amazing concept, and one that Google hope to formally demonstrate by the end of the year.

As well as the video, I have included a list of the features portrayed within it, as well as my speculation on how some of the features will be implemented.

How will they work?

Babak Parviz (a member of the Project Glass team) has developed contact lenses with pixels in them. Presumably you wear one of these, and perhaps a Near Field Communication system built into the housing above your right eye (see images) sends the video signals wirelessly. If Project Glass does use a contact lense with pixels in it, it’ll make for an interesting start to each day!

Presumably there is a sensor/camera directed towards your eyeball to detect where you are looking, if the glasses respond to eye gestures. In the video, the wearer occasionally looks away from whatever is happening to use his glasses, so they may be motion triggered instead. Perhaps a combination of both. As for a camera which takes images of things in front of you, that can be seen clearly as the hole in the right-eye housing.

As for the audio, the images seen so far do not show any sort of earpiece attached to the glasses. Presumably there is a microphone on them somewhere, perhaps in the housing over the right-eye, but this means conversations would be difficult to keep private. Perhaps they will connect to a small Bluetooth headset?

Thinking of Bluetooth headsets made me realise that these glasses are incredibly thin with very little room for technology, let alone a battery. So how will they be powered?
The Video

It certainly has me excited! You? Unfortunately you never see the glasses themselves, but you certainly get an exciting taste as to what we can hope for.
Features shown in the video
Checking In

This is demonstrated by the wearer using head gestures and another form of control to check into the food truck he is standing by with his friend.
Video Calling

This is an amazing feature and a technical marvel. As well as transmitting video from his position, the wearer can see his girlfriend as a small image at the bottom of the screen. Remember this is probably all mocked up in a video editor, and the real image quality on the glasses may be considerably lower.
Calendar/Appointments

Perhaps the most useful feature of them all. I am constantly looking at my calendar to see what is coming up and how I should prepare myself. This feature would make me a very happy man.
Taking Photo/Sharing to Circles

The wearer finds a piece of graffiti art on a wall and takes a photo. Though he asks the glasses to do this for him, it has been reported that the glasses will also have a button for taking photographs. He then shares the image to ‘all my circles’ with a voice command.
Playing Music

Throughout the video music is played, and the viewer is led to think it is being played as background music for the video itself. Turns out that it was representing the ability to listen to music with these glasses, as the wearer gives the command ‘stop music’ before he answers a call from his girlfriend.
What do you think?

Do you want a pair of these glasses? Would you go to the trouble of wearing contact lenses with pixels in them? For that matter, would you be seen in public with them? They certainly have a very distinctive style which may not be for everyone. If these are released anytime soon, I will be fascinated to know the uptake rate.

Ex Motorola Employee Its Actually Harder For Motorola To Work With Android Now

Now that Google owns Motorola most people assume Motorola will get preferential treatment from the Android team.

Leading up to the close of the Google-Motorola deal, Google steadfastly denied this would happen. It insisted it would keep Motorola removed from the Android team. This sounded like it was just talk to keep regulators and partners happy.

Turns out it might be more than just talk. Buried in the New York Times is this little nugget of information: "A Motorola Mobility executive who recently left the company and would speak only on the condition of anonymity because he was uncomfortable talking to the news media, said that if anything, it had become more difficult than before for Motorola to have impromptu collaboration with the Android team."

This makes some sense. Previously, Motorola could talk to Android and no one would raise a fuss since Motorola was just another company like any other. Now, if Motorola is talking to Android and it gets out, people would freak out.

This could just be part of the early-going between the two companies. Right now, Google is probably on edge about the new deal. It doesnt make sense to infuriate Samsung, its biggest partner by helping Motorola which is still a tiny player in the smartphone world... Over time, things could change.

And, on that front, the New York Times mentions that Motorola can hire Google software engineers. It also mentions Motorola might build its own special flavor of Android: "And, people familiar with the companies say, Google could decide to follow Apple’s lead and build a phone from silicon to software, perhaps by creating a separate operating system for Motorola that other phone makers cannot use. "

If Google were to do that, watch out. It would put Google in a very weird, very awkward position with its partners.

Has Android Killed BlackBerry

Android has a massive leading market share. An IDC report showed that Android handsets accounted for 68.1 percent of all smartphones shipped during the second quarter of 2012. In that same period BlackBerry accounted for 4.8 percent. Despite the steady slump in BlackBerry sales, the user base has been climbing slowly, because the overall smartphone market has been growing so much. However, analysts are now predicting a real decline in BlackBerry subscribers.

If we go back to 2009 BlackBerry had a 50 percent share of the smartphone market. Where did it go? Most of it went to Android. It now looks like BlackBerry will peak at around 80 million users and it remains to be seen whether the delayed BlackBerry 10 can do anything to arrest a steady decline or even a sudden free-fall. The new version of the BB platform is not going to launch until 2013 and catching up with Android and iOS functionality is not going to be enough for the beleaguered Canadian company.

RIM’s market cap is now sitting at around $3.3 billion. That makes it a relatively cheap acquisition, but who would buy? There’s little doubt that if BB 10 fails, RIM will need to drastically change its ideas about being a major smartphone player or possibly even sell the company. If 2013 is the year that we finally see the long predicted death of RIM you’ll be able to pan back from the corpse and see Android holding the smoking gun.

Perhaps RIM should have adopted Android and carved out a niche based on its distinctive handset design and enterprise know-how. Does anyone believe BB 10 can turn things around?

Updated Cherry Mobile Fusion Bolt Benchmarks

Last month Cherry Mobile gave away samples of its Fusion Bolt, a quad core tablet with an HD display. Benchmarks posted by PinoyTech Blog put the AnTuTu benchmarks at 5665 points, which was disappointing to some. Comparing it with benchmarks from AnTuTus database, it still looked like a very good value for money proposition.

With Cherry Mobile set to release the Cherry Mobile Fusion Bolt for sale, the company has posted its own benchmark on its Facebook page showing a much higher 11932 points, which puts it within spitting distance from a Google Nexus 7, which does 12726 AnTuTu benchmark points.

A Php3,999 tablet with a 7-inch HD (800 x 1280) display which scored 5665 points on the AnTuTu benchmarks gets a buy recommendation from me. At 11932 points, getting one for Php3,999 would seem to be highway robbery, with the buyer being on the winning end.

It looks the time between the launch and the release in the market, Ainol, which manufactures the Cherry Mobile Fusion bolt, has been optimizing the firmware for the new Actions Semiconductor ATM7025 processor and Vivante GC1000+ graphics processing unit.

Too good to believe? Lets keep out fingers crossed.

Update: An independent test score the Cherry Mobile Fusion Bolt at 12042 points. Benchmark results vary a bit with each run, but this basically confirm Cherry Mobile post.

Androids Next Iteration code name Jelly Bean

From the beginning, Android users have been trying to guess whats in store for the OS, even down to what the next version will be called. While many have speculated on what Ice Cream Sandwichs successor will be named, This is my Next reported today that a "trusted source" revealed that the next version of Android will in fact be called Jelly Bean.

As usual we have no idea what version number this will be, but the source also divulged that "game-changing" features will be integrated into Jelly Bean, some of which were initially meant for Ice Cream Sandwich.

As it stands, we have very little to go on regarding Ice Cream Sandwich, so it definitely feels a bitearly to begin thinking about Jelly Bean - but with todays story, the speculation can officially begin.

Update: This Is My Next has just reported that another "well-regarded" source chimed in today to calm concerns over the game-changing features supposedly left out of Ice Cream Sandwich in favor of Jelly Bean. The source says first of all that Jelly Bean is simply "in the running" as the name of the next Android OS because there are honestly just a few sensible dessert names starting with J (personally Im rooting for Jawbreaker). The source also indicates that Ice Cream Sandwich will still be a major release, bringing several fundamental changes and improvements with it, and not just a slightly tweaked re-hash of Android 2.x.

Leaked Table Shows The Specs Of The Galaxy S IV

Previously we have seen leaked benchmarks of the Galaxy S IV which showcase the chipsets and specs found in the region specific units, but weve not quite feasted on leaks of the international models specs. Apparently this table above has been leaked and at the very right of the table is the Galaxy S IV which reveals some specs but there is not much to feast on. There is no product icon, size and weight. But what is there is the processor, OS, screen size, RAM, and the release date. The release date listed on the table is March 2013 and that is aligned with what is previously said. Stay tuned for more leaked details.

Apple iPhone SMS flaw discovered Apples solution use iMessage instead

Last Friday, pod2gs discovered a flaw in the SMS application used in the Apple iPhone. The flaw allows a sender of a malicious address to make it appear that the message comes from a trusted source. This could allow "pirates could send a message that seems to come from the bank of the receiver asking for some private information, or inviting them to go to a dedicated website." This flaw is still present in the latest beta of the next version of iOS6 which will be released together with the next iPhone.

Apples response to the matter has been to effectively say use iMessage instead:

"Apple takes security very seriously. When using iMessage instead of SMS, addresses are verified which protects against these kinds of spoofing attacks. One of the limitations of SMS is that it allows messages to be sent with spoofed addresses to any phone, so we urge customers to be extremely careful if theyre directed to an unknown website or address over SMS." (Source: Engadget).

The response is a bit odd. Instead of promising a fix, Apple seems to be saying that you really cannot trust a SMS message received on an iPhone. I am not sure if Apple has no plans to fix the problem or simply wants to downplay the issue now, since there is no time to implement a fix before the release of the next iPhone. In any event, using iMessage is not a solution. Not everyone is on an iPhone, and those that are, are not all on unlimited data plans. And what about messages from other people, you cannot always reply by iMessage.

In any event, the nature of the flaw now being public, best advice is do not give complete trust that SMS messages received from your iPhone come from the source indicated in the message. Basically, do not send reply with any sensitive information via SMS and do not click website links in SMS messages you receive.

Who won at High Court patent battle Samsung vs Apple

Apple defeated Samsung at the high court. According to the judge, three technology patents it claimed had been infringed by its rival were invalid.

Samsung said it was disappointed by the court decision. Upon a thorough review of the judgment we will decide whether to file an appeal, a spokeswoman said.

The main issue was that The Korean giant sued Apple over patents related to the 3G mobile broadband standard. Its defeat is the latest result in a global barrage of claims and counterclaims between the two companies, which between them account for one in every two smartphone sold worldwide.

The three patents were “standards-essential” that mean the technology to make a 3G phone. But Samsung was obliged to license them. It was seeking a 2.4 per cent royalty on Apple iPhone sales.

All three patents were found invalid by The judge, Mr Justice Floyd. Because they were the same as earlier patents or described technology too “obvious” to enjoy legal protection. Last time Apple claiming Samsung had unlawfully copied the designs of the iPhone and iPad in its Galaxy range. It lost and was ordered to take out newspaper advertisements admitting it had not been ripped off.

Apple’s war on Android gets major blow in the form of 1994 “future tablet” video

It’s hard to believe that someone envisioned tablet PCs 18 years ago, but a dusty video clip from 1994 shows us that there were, in fact, technology visionaries before Steve Jobs (insert “ironic grin” here).

The video shows how newspaper company Knight Ridder saw the news of the future and, darn it, I must say that those guys were spot on with their assumptions. However, what they probably didn’t think their little video would do is seriously hurt Apple’s chances of winning the design patent war against Samsung and other Android tablet manufacturers, a war that is heading towards a conclusion these days.

How did something like this happen? Well, it’s pretty simple. Apple has been accusing Samsung numerous times over the past year or so of ripping off the iPad’s design with its Galaxy Tab slates.

The design in question is a rectangle with rounded corners and a big glass screen, which, for anyone with some sense, doesn’t sound like an awfully original concept. However, as today’s legal system is more complicated than some of us can understand, the legal heads at Apple really had a shot at proving they had invented the whole “rectangle with bla bla…” concept.

That is before this video surfaced, showing off and, hopefully definitively proving, that Apple didn’t, in fact, create a groundbreaking and innovative design concept with the iPad, but rather took something pretty simple and straightforward and refined it and gave it polish.

The 1994 Fiddler/Knight Ridder “tablet” shown in the video below created “the same basic visual impression” as Apple’s D’889 patent for the iPad, Judge Lucy Koh decided recently, basically squashing Apple’s last hope of squeezing some money from Samsung or other technology manufacturers.

Judge Koh’s Court found that “Samsung has raised a substantial question regarding the validity of the D’889 patent on obviousness grounds’’, so, while Apple will probably continue to look for “justice” in courtrooms in the US and all over the globe, Samsung has good chances to be allowed to continue selling and manufacturing Galaxy Tabs.

I’m not one to judge or cast a stone in any direction, but, in this particular case, I would like to offer a sincere and simple opinion, that probably most of you share. Apple, which, indeed, is one of the most innovative technology companies of the past decades, is certainly not honoring its name by continuing to fight pointless legal battle that they don’t even stand a chance to win.

Without having legal studies of any kind (watching every season of the original “Law and Order” doesn’t count, does it?), with some common sense and a bit of reason, I can safely say that hell will freeze before Apple will win any trial referring to one of their products’ designs. I mean, come on, guys, you’re not Picasso and you didn’t invent the straight line, so give up the whole patent folly and start thinking of how you can come up with better, prettier, and snappier devices!
